Postpartum Basket Essentials for Every New Mom
Becoming a new mom is one of the most beautiful and challenging seasons of life.
In those early weeks after giving birth, your body is healing, your emotions are adjusting, and your hands are always full (literally). One of the best ways to make those first days easier is by creating a postpartum basket that lives right next to the toilet. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
I put my postpartum basket together before heading to the hospital this time so it’s ready to go when we get home. It’s already fully stocked and set up next to the toilet in my bathroom.
I’m hoping it will save me from scrambling for supplies when I need them most, and make bathroom trips much less stressful.
I was a scheduled c-section with my first baby, but this time I’m trying for a VBAC and the planning for recovery is not only totally different, but brand new to me.
Why You Need a Postpartum Basket
After childbirth, simple tasks like going to the bathroom can feel overwhelming. A well-stocked postpartum basket means everything you need for recovery is right at your fingertips.
That way you’re not getting up looking for supplies or calling for help from the toilet, lol.
It’s all about comfort, convenience, and giving yourself a little extra care during the healing process… Which, let’s be honest, we all need extra TLC during this time.
What to Include in Your Postpartum Basket
Here’s exactly what I kept in mine — all tried, tested, and mama-approved.
- Peri Bottle
Hospitals often give you one, but having an extra at home is a lifesaver. It helps gently clean without irritation. Whether having a vaginal birth or cesarean, this is an essential item for recovery. - Padsicles or Cooling Pads
Whether you make your own or buy them pre-made, these soothe swelling and offer instant relief. - Perineal Spray
A quick spritz can help with pain and speed healing. Look for natural, alcohol-free formulas. - Heavy Flow Pads
Post-birth bleeding can be heavy, so stock up on high-absorbency pads that are soft and comfortable. I did go through these like crazy after my c-section with Kenny. - Disposable Underwear
Not glamorous, but incredibly practical for the first week or two. I’ve heard from many followers that the hospital undies are not ideal, so I went ahead and grabbed some for my kit.
How to Organize Your Postpartum Basket
I used a super cute diaper caddy basket from Target that came with three divided sections so I could see everything at a glance.
I have it fully stocked with everything I need and I’m keeping back stock in my bathroom cabinet. If you have space near your toilet, then a rolling caddy would work just as well.
Final Thoughts
Your postpartum basket is more than just a convenience… It’s a little act of self-love during a season when you’re giving so much to that fresh new baby. Preparing it ahead of time will save you stress, keep you comfortable, and hopefully make your recovery a little smoother.
This would also make for a fabulous postpartum gift basket idea for any new mother in your life. You would be the talk of the baby shower if you gave one of these caddies fully stocked with everyt single thing a new mama needs for recovery.
If you’re currently nesting, add “make postpartum basket” to your to-do list. You’ll be so glad you did!
